The In-Patient Cognitive Rehabilitation Program

Cognitive_Rehab_ProgramThe in-patient cognitive program is facilitated by a transdisciplinary group of therapists which specializes in the delivery of cognitive rehabilitation services. The program offers individualized services in a group setting to provide training in the foundation skills required for cognitive function.

This program is based on substantial research that supports the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation for improving attention deficits, memory impairments and functional communication.

When necessary, involvement in this program is in addition to other prescribed individual therapies.

Staff members include a speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, social worker, a recreation therapist and a rehabilitation technician, all with specialized licesnes and certifications.

The group ratio is generally four or five staff to six or seven patients.

The group runs two hours a day Monday and Wednesday and three hours a day Tuesday and Thursday.

The benefits are as follows:

  • Services from a variety of specialized therapists and support staff.
  • Peer support and interaction.
  • Participants develop foundation skills that support improved safety, self-awareness, visual and auditory processing, functional independence and social interaction.
  • Education and communication regarding cognitive strategies are provided to patients, families, nursing and therapy teams.

Expected outcome:

  • Our in-patient participants will develop the necessary skills and endurance to participate in a six to eight hour program for continued out patient cognitive rehabilitation or vocational rehabilitation.
  •  Improvement demonstrated between pre and post neuropsychiatric testing.
  • Anecdotal reports of progress from family members and CMRC staff.

Criteria for admission:

  • Diagnosis of an acquired brain injury.
  • Ranchos Los Amigos(RLA) level 5 or above
  • Effective and reliable communication.
  • Ability to use a writing implement.
  • Absence of disruptive behaviors.
  • Intact basic orientation skills.
  • Endurance for two hours of cognitive activity.
  • In-patient status.

*  all exceptions to the above will be considered by the clinical team
