Therapeutic Recreation


Protocol:
Special Olympics Swim Team
Purpose:
To improve social, emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities through participation in Swim Team
Facilitator:
CTRS
Duration:

8 x1 hour practice over a 6 week period

Location:
Recreation Pool

Goals:

  1. Increase gross motor function
  2. Improve social skills
  3. Improve physical fitness
  4. Follow through on commitments
  5. Introduce students to a healthy leisure lifestyle
  6. Improve confidence and self esteem
  7. Understand/develop basic swimming skills
  8. Learn/understand pool rules
  9. Develop friendships
  10. Develop positive sportsmanship skills

Participation Requirements:

  1. Ability to tolerate an activity environment for up to an hour
  2. Display interest in activity
  3. Ability to follow or respond to at least 1 verbal/signed instruction

Discharge Criteria:

  1. Completion of season
  2. Discharge for CMRC
  3. Individual does not meet participation requirements.
  4. Inappropriate or unsafe behavior while in pool
  5. Inappropriate or agitated behavior demonstrated two times during the season

Precautions:

  1. Attendance is not permitted for those presenting with contagious/infectious disease or any other conditions outlined in aquatic’s policy and procedure manual.
  2. Sessions will be canceled for inclement weather (lightning)
