Therapeutic Recreation

Clinical Caseloads


Therapeutic Recreation Specialists work as members of an interdisciplinary team. Relevant information about the patient is gathered from the individual’s assessment, medical record, medical staff, and family members. Individual treatment plans and programs are developed consistent with client needs, abilities and interests. Select activity modalities are utilized to treat or maintain the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the individuals served. These interventions help individuals remediate the effects of illness or disability and achieve an optimal level of personal independence. The goals of the Clinical Caseload include improving physical, cognitive and social functioning. Caseloads are determined by licensure and/or regulations consistent with a referral process dependent on client placement and/or assessment.

Therapeutic Recreation Specialists work together with the client to establish individual goals and objectives, and to achieve desired outcomes, through one or more of the following Clinical Caseload groups:

Community Awareness/Integration

Community awareness/integration groups will focus on having a client become more familiar with community resources. This may include researching information on the internet, using phone books, maps, managing money etc. Trips out into the community will occur once a month to give hands on learning about these skills practiced.  Group size should be 2-3 clients. Leisure Education

Leisure Education groups focus on various aspects of leisure (games, books, crafts, etc) and how an individual can participate in these aspects again. Necessary adaptations or education on the topic of interest is provided. The goal is to give a client the resources to  participate independently in leisure interests. Sensory Stimulation

Sensory stimulation groups utilize as many of the senses as possible to evoke some stimulation from the client. Techniques such as a hand massage, spiked massage balls, music, light up devices, switch-activated devices, bubbles and different aromas may be used in a sensory based group. Group size should be 1-2 clients to allow for one on one attention. More...

Social Interaction

Social interaction groups focus on clients interacting with one another in an appropriate way. Topics that may be discussed are how to start and maintain a conversation, appropriate language, how to appropriately introduce oneself and other skills you would use in a social setting.  Group size should be 3-4 clients. Sports Skills

Sports skills group will provide clients with a chance to become involved with sports and learning new ones. Assistance will be given for adaptations that may be needed to allow participation. Group size 3-4 clients or more depending on sport. More...
