Crotched Mountain Campus
Breathtaking Beauty and Access
Crotched Mountain School is situated on acres of protected forest, open fields of wild blueberries and heather, and wetlands teeming with wildlife. Our highly accessible buildings and classrooms are equipped with everything from environmental controls to adjustable desks and assistive technology unique to each student's needs. Within this setting, we offer the highest quality educational, vocational, therapeutic, residential and recreational opportunities.
America's Longest Accessible Trail
Many people with disabilities have never been able to spend time in nature. For that reason, Crotched Mountain has developed a network of safe and accessible mountainside trails - the longest such trail network in the U.S. Now our students can enjoy the outdoors with friends and family, learn about the natural world, and experience the deep beauty of our forests and fields. The trail is also used for educational experiences such as maple sugaring and exploring earth science, biology and ecology following the scientific method. It is also open for the public to enjoy.
Crotched Mountain's natural woods setting allows for a wide range of outdoor experiences. In summer, our lakeside waterfront is used for therapeutic recreation, swimming lessons and other activities. An accessible playground provides recreational opportunities for all children. And in winter, a nearby ski mountain allows students to enjoy snow sports.
Assistive Device Center
The assistive technology experts at Crotched Mountain assess and create custom solutions for communications, seating, environmental controls, mobility and daily living supports. They also provide equipment repair onsite, significantly reducing the time students typically wait when equipment is shipped to manufacturers for repair.
Our heated, 25-yard, four-lane swimming pool is used for therapies, swimming lessons and recreational swimming. It is accessible by lift or ramp. Our adjoining heated therapy pool is equipped with a remarkable elevating floor that adjusts the water level from zero to five feet, allowing easy entry. Our aquatics program reduces muscle and joint pain, and creates an optimal balance of resistance and buoyancy for improving strength, balance, mobility, circulation and flexibility.
Carter Hall Theater
Our fully accessible theater boasts a stage and full audio visual capabilities for events and big-screen movies. It is used for school gatherings, movies, plays, talent shows and performing arts.
Greenhouse and Outdoor Gardens
At Crotched Mountain School, students are encouraged to explore as many interests as possible. Our greenhouse and outdoor gardens are part of the science curriculum and provide an ideal setting for students to experience the sense of accomplishment that comes from harvesting vegetables and flowers that they have planted and cultivated from seed to maturity. To complete the cycle, students prepare vegetables for meals and flowers for beautiful arrangements for themselves and others at Crotched Mountain.
Students at Crotched Mountain have the rare opportunity to acquire academic and vocational skills while connecting with their environment through our farm school. In addition to the activities at the greenhouse and outdoor gardens, they can raise and tend chickens on campus, and tap sugar maple trees in our forest. In this setting students learn to use tools, connect with their environment, relate to and care for animals, and other activities that help them learn vocational and academic skills in a practical setting.
Crotched Mountain may be the only special education school with its own bowling alley. A favorite with the students, this space is used almost daily for fun and Special Olympics training. Students interested in additional sports activities can take advantage of our full-size gymnasium for adaptive activities such as basketball, physical education and dance.
Our multi-media library is a warm and welcoming place for students to gather, study and relax. A custom floor plan provides access for all students to read or hear books and newspapers, watch movies in the mini-theater, access satellite TV, go online and use our video conferencing technology. Assistive technologies from switches to eye gaze typing allow all students to participate in their curriculum. Students have access to iPads and iPods and can use email and Skype to keep in touch with their families and friends. The breathtaking views from our two-story windows add to the center's inviting ambience.
Living on campus helps students foster close friendships and a true sense of belonging. Each student's individual needs are thoughtfully considered in selecting the most appropriate residential setting, whether it be in a group home, apartment, shared living with the staff or at Crotched Mountain Specialty Hospital. In addition to supporting each student's health care needs, every residence is designed to nurture students' personal growth and development.
Therapy Gyms and Fitness Room
Students receive high-quality rehabilitative therapies in our fully equipped therapy gyms and fitness room. Highlights include weights, sensory activities, bicycles, a bolster swing for practicing balance and elevated platforms for therapies.
Vocational Skills Center
The Skills Center at Crotched Mountain provides students with vocational education, work exposure and career development and supports our Life Skills Curriculum. Students experience a genuine workplace environment - supporting the management of our campus - while learning valuable skills they can transfer to jobs in their communities.
