Residential & Day Students
Residential Life
Many of our students reside on campus to benefit from integrated therapeutic and medical attention around the clock. Campus life provides a consistent learning and living environment that enhances academics and reinforces new social and behavioral learning across school and residential settings.
With acres of open space, rolling fields, forest, accessible trails and many activities to encourage, enthuse and expand horizons, every day is filled with meaningful and valuable activities. This is a place where kids make lasting friendships and feel at home among peers, teachers, direct care professionals and therapeutic and medical staff.
A Warm Environment for Learning and Growth
We carefully consider each student's needs in order to choose the most appropriate residential setting, whether it is a group home, apartment or shared living with a staff member. Every residence is accessible and designed to nurture students' personal growth and development. We encourage students to personalize their living space with belongings from home. Families are welcome to visit at any time and can stay in guest accommodations on our campus.
The residential staff works closely with students' teachers and school therapists - including their nutritionist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and psychologist - to reinforce lessons learned during class and in therapy sessions. Students put these lessons to practical use by participating in household activities such as preparing dinner, doing laundry, cleaning their rooms and completing chores. Residential staff members act as role models, helping students practice positive behavior, personal care and relationship-building.
Students with complex and medically fragile conditions who require hospital-level care can live in the warm surroundings of the Specialty Hospital and attend school during the day. Children who would otherwise be unable to enjoy daily interaction with peers and a classroom environment can do so with close proximity to medical facilities familiar with their medical needs.
Attentive Staff Supervision
Our licensed residential settings are supervised by specially trained staff and provide a high staff-to-student ratio. Staff members are trained in each student's physical and emotional health care. They work in tandem with our Health Center staff and clinicians to monitor students' sleep, medication, seizures and behaviors. An on-call pediatrician and nurse are always available to respond to signs of illness or injury.
Staff is awake overnight at each on-campus residence, with a supervisor and alternate staff also available. A crisis-response team is on call for immediate crisis intervention support to both students and residential staff.
A World of Recreation, On and Off Campus
On-campus, the range of activities is remarkable, from barbecues to campfires, drumming circles, maple sugaring, swimming in the pool or at the waterfront, enjoying the playground, fishing, exercising, playing sports, crafts, block parties, dances and even bowling. There are special movie nights in the media center, karaoke nights, music nights and game nights. Accessible hiking trails also give children opportunities to spend time in nature.
At house meetings, students help to select and plan outings and events such as personal shopping, movies, plays, baseball games and group trips. These off-campus activities give students more opportunities to generalize the skills they're learning in school.
