GREENFIELD, NH One hundred twenty-five mountain bike racers defied late-race inclement weather on an unseasonably cool day to participate in the fourth Hampshire 100 on Sunday, August 22. The race benefits the programs and services of Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield.
New Hampshire's premiere ultra endurance mountain bike event, sanctioned by the Eastern Fat Tire Association, hosted racers from New England, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Beginning and ending at Oak Park in Greenfield, NH, the race traversed trails and byways in Francestown, Bennington, Deering, Weare and Hancock, as well as Greenfield, in a loop that circles Crotched Mountain.
"Crotched Mountain is thrilled to welcome back these intrepid riders," said president Don Shumway. "The racers and the 140 volunteers collaborate to raise money and awareness for our work with children and adults who have multiple disabilities. We thank them all."
After racing on more than 62 miles of trails, the first and second place overall winners finished in nearly identical times. Justin Spinelli, from Nashua, NH crossed the finish line with a time of 5:09:42, with Nick Waite of Harrisonburg, VA finishing nearly beside him. Both riders have impressive cycling resumes, having ridden at such world class events as the Amgen Tour of California, Tour of Shenandoah and Giro d'Italia and successfully competing and placing at numerous national and world championships.
