GREENFIELD, NH - Back by popular demand... Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center and Eastern Mountain Sports once again team up to offer a kayaking program for people whose personal challenges require extra attention and supervision.
On Friday, September 24, 2010, Recreational Therapists with Crotched Mountain's Accessible Recreation and Sports (CMARS) program will join with professional instructors from the Eastern Mountain Sports School to offer the adaptive kayaking sessions at Sunset Lake in Greenfield.
"We're very pleased to be partnering with EMS again on this program," says Michael D. Redmond, Senior Vice President and COO of Crotched Mountain Foundation. "Together, we have the equipment, people and expertise to offer a high-quality experience for people who need a little help to enjoy paddling. The initial adaptive kayaking program we held in July was a big success so we were excited when the EMS Sports School was able to offer this class with us again."
The program is designed for people of all ages and abilities. "We take away any barriers that prevent someone with a disability from getting out and enjoying the sport of kayaking," says Molly Hajjar, community recreation therapist for Crotched Mountain.
Hajjar notes that no paddling experience is required to participate in this program. All participants are asked to come with a friend, caregiver or family member who is willing to paddle in a tandem kayak. With advanced notice upon registration, a volunteer can be provided to participants who do not have someone willing to be in the boat with them.
The cost of the program is $35 for a 2-hour session, and all gear is included. The sessions will be offered from noon to 2 p.m., and 3 to 5 p.m.
The enjoyment and safety of participants is the foremost consideration. "The EMS instructors and Crotched Mountain recreational therapists will take care of the details to ensure that everyone has a safe, successful, and fun day on the lake," says Molly Hajjar.
