GREENFIELD, NH This summer, thousands of men and women will be heading to Boston to participate in Breast Cancer 3-Day, a 60-mile walk designed to raise awareness of and money for breast cancer research and related community outreach programs.
Among those will be two students from Crotched Mountain School , Rachel Horyn from Nantucket , and Tonia Maeder from Groton , MA . They will be joined by two staff members, Jeanne (Euvrard) LaFleur, originally from Athol , MA , and Kate Washburn, a native of Laconia , NH . Both work closely with Rachel and Tonia at "Willow House," one of fifteen residences for students attending Crotched Mountain School .
"We decided to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day as a way to honor the many cancer survivors among our co-workers," said Jeanne LaFleur, "including our good friends Jean Polovchik and MaryLou Lannon." "I look forward to marching through the streets of Boston with thousands of others as we raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer," added Kate Washburn.
The Breast Cancer 3-Day in Boston will start on Friday morning, August 4th, and end with closing ceremonies on Sunday afternoon, August 6th. It is one of twelve such events nationwide that jointly benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust. Walkers will cover about 20 miles a day, traveling at their own pace. They will be supported by hundreds of volunteers who will provide meals, water and snack stops, gear transport, hot showers, portable restrooms, safety on the streets and comprehensive medical services.
This year, in New Hampshire alone, approximately 800 women and men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast Cancer 3-Day participants have an opportunity to celebrate breast cancer survivorship, honor those who lost their lives to the disease, and collectively, have an enormous impact on funding for breast cancer programs.
Each participate in Breast Cancer 3-Day must train for the event and commit to raising a minimum of $2,200 through individual pledges and fundraising activities, such as car washes and bake sales. Anyone who wishes to help Jeanne, Kate, Rachel or Tonia reach their respective goals may contribute online by following the "Donate" and " Boston " links on the event's website: www.The3Day.org.
