Since 1876, the American Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR) has been providing leadership in the field of mental retardation. Among the awards they bestow are: the FULL COMMUNITY INCLUSION AWARD; the INTERNATIONAL AWARD; and the SPECIAL STUDENT AWARDS.
The American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) created the Community Builder Award to recognize exemplary efforts to create communities that provide the respect, opportunity, and support needed by people with disabilities to live as included and valued members. Any individual or provider that is financially compensated for support provided directly to persons with disabilities is eligible for the "Service Provider" recognition. ANCOR also hosts a national advocacy effort in support of DSP's: http://www.supportnac.org. There is a page entitled "media information" that offers some insight and background related to the issue.

Periodically, CMCC holds an appreciation day to honor direct service professionals employed by partnering human service organizations.
DCA's mission is to improve the quality of care for consumers through the creation of higher quality jobs and working conditions for direct-care paraprofessional workers.
The Irwin Siegel Agency (ISA) of Rock Hill, NY has created and sponsored these awards as a way of "supporting those who support others." ISA has been providing insurance packages for the Human Service Field for over 30 years.
The Moving Mountains Awards are presented to organizations and agencies that have demonstrated best practice in direct support workforce development. They are awarded by the Research and Training Center on Community Living at the University of Minnesota in partnership with the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP). We will soon post nomination information for the 2007 awards.

The Association for the Severely Handicapped, (TASH), since renamed The Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps, is accepting proposals for presentations at its upcoming conference to be held in Baltimore, MD on November 8-11. Among the awards they bestow are: the ALICE H HAYDEN AWARD; the IMAGE AWARDS; and the THOMAS G HARING AWARD FOR RESEARCH.
