GREENFIELD, NH The Governor and Council met on Wednesday, June 7th at the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center . "We are pleased to host this meeting of the Governor and Council and appreciate Councilor Peter Spaulding nominating us for this prestigious honor," remarked Crotched Mountain president Donald L. Shumway. "It's a wonderful opportunity for our local community to learn how their government works. We are looking forward to sharing information about Crotched Mountain and the work we do on behalf of New Hampshire citizens."
The meeting opened with a color guard from Boy Scout Troop #349 who led the group in the pledge of allegiance. After words of welcome from Mr. Shumway, Councilor Spaulding, and Governor John Lynch, students from Crotched Mountain's wheelchair dance ensemble gave a moving performance that received a standing ovation.
A highlight of the proceedings included a special tribute to former First Lady Catherine "Cay" (Warner) Gregg, commending her for her lifelong dedication to a number of causes and organizations, including Crotched Mountain. Commendations were also presented to five Crotched Mountain employees: Richard Beaudin of Auburn, NH; Colleen Elliott of Keene, NH; Sandra Holden Knapp of Haverhill, NH; Bette Lewicke, Ph.D. of Dublin, NH; and Leah Reed of Epping, NH. The Executive Council of the State of New Hampshire has the authority and responsibility, together with the Governor, over the administration of the affairs of the State. Each of the five Executive Councilors represents one fifth of the population or approximately 247,000 citizens. Councilors are elected every two years, concurrently with the Governor. The Councilors participate in the active management of the business of the state, ensuring no expenditure can be legally authorized without the availability of adequate funds.
Crotched Mountain is a charitable organization employing more than 900 people.
