Broderick wins at EFTA's Hampshire 100, Evans First Woman: Crotched Mountain Foundation is Beneficiary of Race Event

8/22/2007 - Greenfield, NH

GREENFIELD, NH — August 19: Mike Broderick won the Eastern Fat Tire Association's inaugural HAMPSHIRE 100. Broderick, of Chilmark, Massachusetts decimated the field, racing off from the gun and winning virtually unchallenged over the 62.9 mile course in 4 hours 50 minutes. Mike used the race to test his world class form over the novel course leading up to next month's World Championships at Fort William, Scotland. The overall female champion, Katherine Evans, of Concord, New Hampshire, crossed the finish line in 7 hours 15 minutes. Full race results here: www.efta.com.

Hooting owls wakened campers before the 6:45 am start. Sunny skies and 47 degree temperatures at race time made for perfect conditions over the dry, hilly terrain. The fast start gave way to seemingly endless rolling NH class 6 doubletrack with superfast, gnarly descents and finished with flowing singletrack off the backside of Crotched Mountain. Aid stations were appreciated by many racers who, as of 5 pm, were still coming in to the applause of all. "The course rocked!" exclaimed enthused racer Clayton George of Salisbury, NH. For the lucky category winners, customized wind chimes and medals memorializing the inauguration sung and swung in the afternoon breeze.

Event director, Randi Whitney and trail boss, Denis Laliberte of EFTA navigated land owner hurdles and race logistics for the clockwise point to point event. Greenfield parks director Jim Hopkins opened the Oak Park area for the race and was impressed by hearty competitors and was last seen considering the purchase of a singlespeed. Thanks go to the many race officials, Greenfield Trails Association, and private landowners who made this spectacular race possible. Net proceeds from this event are to benefit Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center, offering a lifelong alliance to people with disabilities.
