Crotched Mountain Welcomes New Manager of Volunteer Services

10/30/2007 - Greenfield, NH

Susan Hackler JD, MPH

GREENFIELD , NH — Crotched Mountain Foundation is pleased to welcome its new manager of volunteer services, Susan Hackler, JD, MPH, of Goffstown , NH . In her role she will recruit, train and support a diverse group of volunteers including high school and college students, loaned professionals from local businesses, and retirees to improve the lives of the individuals with disabilities who receive services at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center . She will also coordinate related community events such as blood drives for the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

"We are delighted to welcome Susan to our organization," states director of intern and volunteer services, Kevin Harte." "In addition to her superb academic credentials, she brings a genuine interest in helping people in need through her extensive experience as a volunteer herself."

Originally from Peterborough , NH , Hackler attended both Harvard and McGill universities, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology with great distinction. She went on to receive a master's degree in public health from Yale University where she advocated for vulnerable populations through her academic research. Thereafter, Hackler graduated from Vermont Law School where she received two fellowships to study the relationship of domestic abuse and access to healthcare, and pursued an interest in environmental law.

Throughout her career she has supported people with disabilities and their families through a number of healthcare projects in the public and private sectors. Hackler managed a volunteer program at the Montreal Neurological Hospital where she worked weekly with patients with a variety of brain injuries, helping to steer them through the frustrations of their therapy, talking with family members, and being part of the larger therapeutic community. Additionally, she has extensive experience as a volunteer herself at homeless shelters, mental health clinics and substance abuse treatment units.

"I am honored to be working at Crotched Mountain ," remarks Hackler. "With over a ten year absence from New Hampshire , it is wonderful to return home and to work in my own community; particularly to be part of such an outstanding and progressive organization committed to helping those with disabilities."
