GREENFIELD, NH — As the rest of New Hampshire voted in the 2008 Primary, the students of Crotched Mountain School conducted their own Primary elections on Tuesday. The mock election was part of a school project designed to teach students about the presidential election process. Special Education teacher Karen Riccardi was the project coordinator.

The day began with voter registration. Students gave their name to the checklist clerk in the school lobby and then selected either a Democratic or Republican ballot. Next, they went to Karen's classroom which was transformed into the voting polls for the school. At the polls students could choose to vote by paper ballot or electronic voting using Intellikeys or touch screen.

Karen worked with Leo Benoit of the Speech department and Linda Beliveau of the Assitive Technology Unit to set up assistive technology devices in the voting booths to ensure that each student had a chance to vote regardless of their physical challenges. Intellikeys keyboards connected to computers were fitted with specially designed ballots with photos of the presidential candidates. Students could cast their vote by pressing the candidate's photo on the keyboard. The computers were programmed to tally the votes.
