GREENFIELD, NH — On May 16th thru the 18th , 2005, Crotched Mountain Foundation will host a workshop on a graphic planning process designed to bring family members, children and adults with disabilities, service providers and community members into creative collaboration.
PATH (Planning Alternative Futures with Hope) is an alternative to system-focused program, special education and service planning. It helps to enroll a person's friends, neighbors, extended family members and members of church, civic and cultural associations in organized support circles that can work in tandem with more traditional services.
The workshop features a set of rapid planning, problem-solving and community-building techniques for moving from programmed "activity" to meaningful community connection and contribution. The tools are sensitive to local culture and community values.
The presenters, David and Faye Wetherow, pioneered systems to deliver individualized services for people with disabilities. They created some of the first inclusive housing and service cooperatives and developed the first "Microboards", a unique service model that makes it possible for people with disabilities, friends and family members to direct their own support services. As parents, they shared their lives with an adopted daughter who lived with complex mobility, health and communication challenges.
