Thompson Endowment Awards $17,000 to Crotched Mountain In Support of Seacoast Residents With Disabilities

2/14/2006 - Portsmouth, NH

PORTSMOUTH, NH – Thanks to a $17,000 award to Crotched Mountain from the Roger R. & Theresa S. Thompson Endowment, seacoast residents with chronic illnesses or disabilities now have a new source of financial assistance called the "Seacoast Opportunity Fund."

"We greatly appreciate continued support from the Thompson Endowment," said Donald L. Shumway, president and CEO of Crotched Mountain. "Over the course of a year, Crotched Mountain will make grants through the Seacoast Opportunity Fund to those who meet eligibility requirements in order to help them participate more fully in life and their communities."

Grants will be based upon financial need and, typically, will range from $250 to $1,000, though larger grants are possible. Examples of qualifying grant requests include adaptive equipment, hearing aids, dental or vision services, or home modifications.

Individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities currently living in any of the following townships are encouraged to apply:

New Hampshire

Brentwood Dover Durham

Greenland Hampton Kensington
Kingston Lee Madbury
New Castle Newfields Newington
Newmarket Plaistow Portsmouth
Raymond Rye Seabrook
Somersworth Stratham

Maine

Berwick Kennebunk Kennebunkport

Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis and should be received approximately one month prior to the next meeting. 2006 meetings will take place on January 10th, April 11th, July 11th, and October 10th.  To obtain a Seacoast Opportunity Fund application, please contact Crotched Mountain Community Care: 50 Maplewood Avenue, Suite 212, Portsmouth, NH 03801; 603-431-3042; communitycare@crotchedmountain.org.

The Thompsons were longtime residents of Portsmouth and of Kittery, ME. Their endowment was established in 2000 through the will of Mrs. Thompson. It is administered by Boynton Waldron Doleac Woodman & Scott, P.A., of Portsmouth, who makes annual awards for the benefit of seacoast residents through five designated charities that the Thompsons supported during their lifetimes, including Crotched Mountain.

Crotched Mountain is a charitable organization employing more than 900 people. Its mission is to serve individuals with disabilities and their families, embracing personal choice and development, and building communities of mutual support. Crotched Mountain provides specialized education, rehabilitation, community, and residential support services for more than 2,000 consumers, including individuals with disabilities and the elderly, living in New England and New York.
