Swimming Lessons

Crotched Mountain > Rehabilitation > Aquatics Center > SWIMMING LESSONS                        

Crotched Mountain offers a range of swimming lessons for people of all ages and abilities, including the six-level Learn to Swim program developed by the American Red Cross.  For minimum/maximum enrollment, costs and upcoming schedules, please choose from the following:


Infant

Ages 6 to 18 months; held in therapy pool. Adult must accompany child. Develops comfort level in and around the water. DOES NOT teach children to become accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water.

Toddler 

Ages 18 months to 3 years; held in therapy pool. Adult must accompany child. Develops comfort level in and around the water, and a readiness to swim.

Preschool-Parent

Ages 2 to 4 years; held in therapy pool. Adult must accompany child who is not ready to leave parent. Develops comfort level in and around the water, and teaches basic skills in readiness for swimming.

Preschool 

Ages 3 to 5 years; held in therapy pool. Child must be able to leave parent and follow directions. Develops comfort level in and around the water, and teaches basic skills in readiness for swimming.

Level I 

Eligibility based on ability rather than age; held in recreation pool. Introduction to Water Skills: helps students feel comfortable in the water and able to enjoy the water safely.

Level II 

Eligibility based on ability rather than age; held in recreation pool. Fundamental Aquatic Skills: submerging the head; rhythmic breathing; finning on back; and unsupported floating.

Level III 

Eligibility based on ability rather than age; held in recreation pool. Stroke Development: introduces styles such as coordinated front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, treading water, and jumping into deep water.

Level IV 

Eligibility based on ability rather than age; held in recreation pool. Stroke Improvement: develops confidence by teaching rotary breathing, deep water bobbing, diving from the side of the pool, and basics of the breaststroke and sidestroke.

Level V 

Eligibility based on ability rather than age; held in recreation pool. Stroke Refinement: refines the strokes presented in previous levels and introduces the butterfly, open turns, and the feet-first surface dive.

Level VI 

Eligibility based on ability rather than age; held in recreation pool. Swimming and Skill Proficiency: participants learn to swim them with greater ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Introduces the pike dive, tuck-surface dive, and additional turns.

GuardStart

Designed for youth, age 11-15 years, who have passed Level VI and are thinking about becoming a lifeguard. Held in recreation pool.
