Residential Life & Living Environment

Crotched Mountain > Education > Crotched Mountain School > RESIDENTIAL LIFE

We develop our residential programs around the unique needs and interests of each child we serve. We see each day as an opportunity for our students to grow as a person, learn new skills, and experience different aspects of home and community life.

Our view is that while day-to-day responsibilities in a residential program shift to professional caregivers, educators, and therapists, parents are our partners in shaping the educational, therapeutic, and social experiences for their child.

Most of the children attending Crotched Mountain School reside at the center, either in group homes and apartments on campus, or the Children's Medical Residence, or in an increasing number of community placement options. Some students return home on weekends, while most remain on campus participating in a full array of activities with staff and friends. Families visiting their children are always welcome to stay at our campus guest residence, The Brien Lodge.

Our residential program provides a safe, loving home life for approximately 100 students from ages six to twenty-one. Our staff ratio of anywhere from one to one, to one to three ensures that each of our students develop skills in:

  • Self-care
  • Communication
  • Socialization
  • Relationship building
  • Problem solving
  • Money management
  • Medication management

Our residential program features:

  • Eight ranch-style homes, three community residencesand fourteen apartments
  • We provide staffed as well as family care style living arrangements.
  • Residences equipped with accessible kitchens, appliances, bathrooms and comfortable furnishings
  • Residences with Internet-connected computers
  • Weekly house meetings with residents and staff to plan outings and events
  • Round-the-clock staffing
  • Shared meal preparation and household chores
  • A Children's Medical Residence connected to the school by an enclosed glass walkway for students with complex medical needs. Each room in this residence has its own bath and foyer and is equipped with dual oxygen/suction stations
  • Community placements in foster care arrangements, or other settings

Great care and consideration is involved into placing students in their homes. Students of similar age and ability live together, learn together and help one another.

Whether a student lives in a campus home, the medical residence, or in the community, our goal is to create a warm and supportive home life.
