Therapeutic Recreation

Protocol:
Special Olympics Candlepin Bowling
Purpose:
To improve social, emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities through participation in bowling.
Facilitator:
CTRS
Duration:

6 x 1 hour practices; regional tournament; Fall Games

Capacity: 8 per each hour of practice
Location: School Bowling Alley

Goals:

1.Participant will increase fine motor function.
2. Participant will increase gross motor function.
3. Participant will learn/demonstrate basic candlepin bowling rules

a. Athlete will independently bowl 3 balls
b. Athlete will independently reset after third ball
c. Athlete will independently determine number of pins down
d. Athlete will independently track score

4. Participants will learn basic candlepin techniques
a. aiming ball independently
b. using ramp independently

5. Participants will display positive social skills and sportsmanship skills

6. Participant will demonstrate commitment to the team/participation
a. Participants will attend 66% of practices


Participation Requirements:

  1. Ability to independently initiate forward movement of ball with or without the use of a ramp
  2. Ability to focus and actively participate for one hour
  3. Ability to follow verbal/signed commands
  4. Displays and interest in activity

Discharge Criteria:

  1. Completion of season
  2. Discharge for CMRC
  3. Displays agitated/inappropriate behavior that places themselves or others at risk more than once each season.
  4. Failure to meet participation requirements.

Precautions:

  1. Attendance is not permitted for those presenting with contagious/infectious disease.
  2. Individual’s with health conditions that may pose a significant risk through participation
