Therapeutic Recreation

Protocol:
Special Olympics Softball Skills
Purpose:
To improve social, emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities through participation in Softball
Facilitator:
CTRS (2 Coaches)
Duration:

6 x 1.5 hour practice over a 6 week period

Capacity:
20 participants
Location:
Hayden Field / Softball diamond

Goals:

  1. Increase gross motor function
  2. Increase fine motor function
  3. Improve eye/ hand coordination
  4. Improve social skills
  5. Improve physical fitness
  6. Follow through on commitments
  7. Introduce students to a healthy leisure lifestyle
  8. Improve confidence and self esteem
  9. Understand and demonstrate basic skills of the game
  10. Following directions
  11. Increase attention to task
  12. Develop friendships
  13. Develop positive sportsmanship skills

Participation Requirements:

  1. Ability to independently grasp and release softball/bat
  2. Ability to tolerate an activity environment for up to an hour
  3. Display interest in activity
  4. Ability to follow or respond to at least 1 verbal/signed instruction

Discharge Criteria:

  1. Completion of season
  2. Discharge for CMRC
  3. Individual does not meet participation requirements.
  4. Inappropriate or agitated behavior demonstrated two times during the season

Precautions:

  1. Attendance is not permitted for those presenting with contagious/infectious disease or any other conditions outlined in aquatic’s policy and procedure manual.
  2. Group facilitator should be aware and familiar with client behavior plans when applicable
  3. Facilitator should be aware of client health conditions which may pose significant risks through activities
