Therapeutic Recreation

Protocol:
Special Olympics Track & Field
Purpose:
To improve social, cognitive, emotional, and physical abilities through participation in track and field
Facilitator:
CTRS
Duration:

6/ 1 hour lessons over 6 week, plus Area Games and Summer Games

Capacity:
Location:
School Track and Gym (dependent upon weather)

Goals:

  1. To improve students’ self-esteem and self-worth.
  2. To increase/improve students’ social skills
  3. To improve gross motor functioning.
  4. To improve students’ ability to follow direction.
  5. To increase students’ attention to task.
  6. To gain increased ability to follow through on commitments.
  7. To gain increased knowledge and skill in track and field.

Participation Requirements:

  1. Ability to focus and actively engage in activity for up to one hour.
  2. Display interest in activity
  3. Ability to follow or respond to at least 1 verbal/signed instruction.

Discharge Criteria:

  1. Completion of the season
  2. Discharge from CMRC
  3. Inappropriate or agitated behavior demonstrated two or more times throughout the season

Precautions:

  1. Attendance is not permitted for members presenting with a contagious and/or infectious disease.
  2. Group facilitators should be aware and familiar with client behavior plans when applicable.
  3. Facilitator should be aware of client health conditions, which may pose significant risks through activities.
