Therapeutic Recreation

Clubs

Clubs are opportunities to improve social skills, learn new things, and improve quality of life.  They are designed to help students and clients from our Brain Injury Center and Children’s Specialty Hospital and are offered year round, depending on the interests of our students and clients. Currently, we offer the following:


Arts and Crafts

Arts and Crafts are designed to introduce individuals to different medias to express themselves. The TR Department offers a wide range of arts and crafts anything from painting, clay, jewelry, decorative art, fiber art, stained glass, garden mosaics, to soapmaking,

Prerequisites:

  1. Express interest in participating
  2. Independent or assisted grasp

Astronomy

A club that explores the universe. Designed to open the minds of individuals to the world beyond ours. Using only eyes or the equipment that has been adapted to individuals.

Prerequisites:

  1. Ability to tolerate being outside at night for one hour.

Coffee House

A social event held every other week. It is for clients and staff to relax and enjoy music, food, or other special events together in a common setting.

Handcycling

Handcycle and Biking is designed to create an interest in biking that can be done through out an individual’s entire life. We provide the opportunity for individuals to ride the handcycles either occasionally or on a regular basis. The handcycles are used for the individual’s recreational enjoyment and/or other therapeutic values.

Prerequisites:

  1. Ability to sit in an upright position with minimal support
  2. Ability to grasp hand grips independently
  3. Ability to extend arms fully in a circular pattern to pedal cycle
  4. Ability to push a lever independently (shifting gears)
  5. Ability to pull brakes with enough force to stop cycle

 

Hiking Club

Year round club that meets once a week for a hike.

Prerequisites:
  1. Ambulatory with unimpaired gait
  2. Ability to tolerate busy environment and be active for 3-4 hours
  3. Ability to carry 10 lb. back pack independently
  4. Ability to navigate obstacles (rocks, steep grades. etc) independently or with minimal assistance

Walking Club

Club that meets seasonally (Spring, Summer and Fall.)  Members meet once a month for an organized walk at various on and off mountain locations.

Prerequisites:

  1. Ability to participate in group walk for minimum of 1 hour.
