Special Olympics Summer Games Spirit
2006 Crotched Mountain Track and Field
by: Becca Krest, CTRS

Though the forecast for rain looked grim for the weekend of June 9th through 11th both staff and athletes were in good spirits for the 37th Special Olympics New Hampshire Summer Games in Durham, NH.

Crotched Mountain’s Summer Games delegation were made up of 43 athletes competing in various track and field events in walking, running, power wheelchair, manual wheelchair, jumping and throwing. These events were held at both the outdoor arena and the indoor track at the University of New Hampshire. 997 athletes from all over New Hampshire attended the Summer Games in various competitions.

Overall, this event would not have been possible without continued support from residential staff that accompanied athletes to practice once a week for 8 weeks prior to the Summer Games. Your hard work and perseverance showed through during the athlete’s competition.

We would also like to thank the transportation department, the health center, Hayden, school staff, therapists, case managers, families and many more in making this possible for the participants in this program.

The 2006 Summer Games was a great achievement due to the dedication of the staff that supported the athletes at this event 3 day event. These individuals included: Jan Bevacqua, Laura Burgoyne, Lisa Cansdale, Ann Caswell, Donna Cloud, Tammy Desrosiers, Steven Dillon, Heather Dugan, Debi Folley, Pat Garside, Sandra Gedenberg, Brett Goodwin, Lara Grabazs, Garret Halfpenny, Patricia Heath, Chris Kinsman, Jeanne LaFleur, Meghan McWha, Vuk Milanovic, Tara Neuman, Nichole Nutter, Lee Park, Kanchan Prasai, Colleen Reade, Christian Sayan, Steve Sexton, Beth Simpson, Kim Stevens, Mike Wany, Kate Washburn, Brian Wilkins, Daniel Young, and Jeanne Zwirble. We would like to especially thank our nurse Chuck Jackson and our 3rd shift staff Patsy Crowley, Clement Mou, Rich Smith, Marie Snow and James Wol.

At the Summer Games Opening Ceremonies Crotched Mountain was presented with the “2006 Ray Kroc Spirit Award” by McDonalds of New Hampshire and Special Olympics New Hampshire for being the local team that best represents the spirit of the Summer Games. This award is a testament to staff and athletes who have determination and passion for Crotched Mountain’s programs.

Stay tuned for reports from the Special Olympics National Games in Ames, Iowa taking place July 1st -6th. Crotched Mountain has 4 athletes representing New Hampshire in the Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) Challenge. The staff accompanying our National Team include: Jan Bevacqua, Jennifer Bridges, Geoff Garfinkle, Garret Halfpenny, Patricia Heath, Meghan McWha, and Laura Stockman. Good Luck Crotched Mountain!
